Vocal Cord Surgery

Friday was Abby's vocal cord surgery at Primary Children's Hospital in SLC. We had a lot of time to prepare her for the big day. She struggled a little at the beginning when she had to change into her hospital outfit. But it also didn't help that she went without food most of the day. From 8:00 a.m. until surgery time at 6:40 p.m., she didn't eat a thing! She did have a few liquids until 2:30 p.m., but that's it! Poor girl. But she was so brave and did so well. In the pre-op room, she colored, watched cartoons, rode in the toy ambulance, etc. We sang songs together, read books, and did everything we could to reassure her that everything was going to be okay. She took a drug just 15 minutes before going in that would calm her down and keep her from remembering anything just prior to going into the operating room.
From that point on, Matt and I waited... and we waited. The surgery took about two hours and went well! The doctor said that things were a bit more complicated then he imagined, but they were able to work through things and accomplish what they hoped to. He wants to see her again in the Spring to hear her voice and take a look at how things have healed. It may be that they will have to perform another procedure on the other side of her vocal cords to match what he did this first time. Complicated details = hard to explain!
We are just grateful to have this behind us. She's at Grandma Joyce's recovering and so far is doing great. We are all amazed at the fact that she is talking (though quiet) and seems her normal self otherwise.

She was in her room for the night at about 10:00 p.m. and stayed up coloring in her new princess book until midnight!

The morning after she ate cereal and a muffin with little pain. She was starving!

Just before leaving the hospital, she wanted to share one last popsicle with Mom.

Oh, these pictures made me cry! What a brave little girl--and brave parents! It is so difficult to see your kids go through hard things to do, but you both made it much easier for her with your love and tenderness. I'm so glad it is over!

Look at her eyelashes! I love that pic of her and Matt, and ang you look Beautiful...did you color your hair..anyways you look awesome. I love how you took these pics of abby before her big deal and after (her eating that muffin cracked me up). It's so hard for even me to fast for 1 meal let a lone for 24 hours. She's a strong one just like her mama. didn't you have surgery at about this age on your hand? well, thanks for sharing this serious deal with us.
