March Book Club
On March 6, 2007, The Curious Incident of the Girls Who Laughed Until Midnight Book Club was held at Marianne's house with Andrea as the host. We discussed the book Twilight while we ate treats with minor significant meaning.
Amazon.com sums up the story best:
"In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him, because--he's a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward, so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship."

Picture Time!
To start the discussion, we had a pop quiz on which vampire drove what vehicle. Bella drove a 1953 Chevy Pickup Truck; Edward drove a Volvo S60R; Rosalie drove a BMW M3 Convertible; Carlisle drove a Mercedes S55 AMG; and Emmett drove a Jeep Wrangler.
The story took place in the city of Forks, Washington. This sign was hung on the outside door as book club members arrived.
Hence the title of the book Twilight, this sign was hung on the pillar entering into the room we held our discussion.
What's with the apple?
According to the author's website, "The apple on the cover of Twilight represents "forbidden fruit." I used the scripture from Genesis (located just after the table of contents) because I loved the phrase "the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil." Isn't this exactly what Bella ends up with? A working knowledge of what good is, and what evil is. The nice thing about the apple is it has so many symbolic roots. You've got the apple in Snow White, one bite and you're frozen forever in a state of not-quite-death... Then you have Paris and the golden apple in Greek mythology—look how much trouble that started. Apples are quite the versatile fruit. In the end, I love the beautiful simplicity of the picture. To me it says: choice."
The tomato and cran-raspberry juices were to represent blood; the animal crackers and gummy bears represented animals that the vampires eat.
"Cullen Cookies"
Cullen is the last name of the vampire family in the book. The pictures on the cookies are actors that are being considered for roles in the upcoming movie Twilight.
Megan Hoopes, Jessica Bischoff, Erika Pike, and Michele Batres
